Purposeful Planning in PEAs passionate Physical Education professionals we all know that there is a purpose behind our programs, but do we communicate that to our students in our lessons? Recently I have been focusing on planning for the WHY behind my physical education classes and not focusing on the WHAT and I have found a drastic change in student achievement and engagement. Through a process of purposeful planning, sharing the passion behind the lesson is easy and a great way to increase student engagement, development and foster the passion for physical activity.

Educating your community through simple displays and larger health fairs.
Experienced secondary health teacher share how her students develop essential health skills while preparing to educate the students/community through simple displays and larger health fairs.
Ms. Hallman’s high school health classes have created a health fair for the local elementary schools. Students advocate for health by becoming content experts and creating interactive displays for elementary students. They access valid health resources and write SMART goals to guide their work. Health at the elementary level is lacking in her district, so these fair exposes students to a greater variety of health topics. Four birds, one stone: Community partnerships and possibilities for physical education In addition to the unique and rich opportunities, there are significant challenges facing urban education in the U.S. today: the need to use every academic minute twice to ensure meaningful coverage of academic content, historical practices of under funding, a teaching body that is not representative of students, and challenging school climates, rank highly among them. This session will feature the experiences of two pre-service physical education teachers implementing a mindful movement curriculum in an arts-based interdisciplinary summer school program made possible through community partnerships. The teacher candidates will share insights into community-based collaborations, highlights of the interdisciplinary and mindful movement curriculum, and the impacts of this opportunity on their evolution as future teachers.
